Review of "The Bible"
I’ve been reading this book called “The Bible” for entertainment purposes and I’ve decided to give a little roundup of what I’ve read so far and whether I think it’s worth your while.
Scores out of three.
Genesis
This is a pretty fun book. Lots of sex and violence and death not to mention the anti-heroes Abraham and Yahweh running grifts on local dignitaries. Everyone loves an underdog!
Score: ***
Exodus
After Genesis this book is a real let down. It follows on from where Genesis ends, but with little of the fun and general craziness that characterised the first book. The Israelites are a right whiny bunch and that doesn’t ever seem to let up.
Score: **
Leviticus
Lots and lots of rules. I skipped this.
Score: -
Numbers
Lots and lots of numbers, but also some story. Continuing the story of Exodus and the never-ending whingeing of the Israelites.
Score: *
Deuteronomy
This book finishes off the story of Moses and the Israelites’ march through the desert. It also has lots of rules, but mostly they’re quite easily skipped.
Score: *
Joshua
The first of the Deuteronomic books, this book is about the Israelites conquering Canaan under the leadership of Joshua, who is a sort of Moses-lite. He does pretty much all the same stuff Moses did but it’s not as impressive this time because everyone saw the tricks before when Moses did them. The Israelites let up on the whining somewhat and instead commit genocide. Repeatedly.
Score: **
Judges
Back to the good stuff! Seriously, whoever called the Exodus story the greatest story ever told clearly skipped Genesis and then stopped reading at Joshua. I’ve not finished this book but already we’ve had Gideon defeating half the known world with three hundred men and Abimelech, the son of a prostitute, murdering 70 of his brothers at one sitting and thus throwing the country into chaos. Next up is the story of Samson which promises to be good with his crazy donkey jawbone skills.
