Roundup

I went into work on Monday to discover that Edge v124 (and Chrome, apparently) had been rolled out and was preventing downloads from non‐HTTPS websites. Although it only took us a few hours to work out how to bypass it, so we weren’t telling our users to ‘click through’ security warnings, it took another couple of days before the required GPO update was deployed. Fun.

My RSS reader thing is looking pretty good. I think I’ve managed to fix all the weird wee edge cases that were annoying me, now my biggest concern is just that it’s going to get very slow as the number of items increases. I’ve currently set it to keep the most recent 10,000 items, which is probably overkill, so I expect I’ll reduce that. At some point I fancy rewriting parts of it (or maybe all) in a better language. It’s currently zsh and XSLT and I suspect I could easily get better performance with almost anything else.

I’ve made a concerted effort to kill the weeds on my patio. I just realised today that the weedkiller I’ve got is some half‐arsed stuff that doesn’t actually kill the weeds, so that probably explains why they kept coming back so soon. I may have to invest in something a bit more hardcore.

Or pour boiling water on them. I dunno.

I’ve also just realised, while writing this, that either my spell checker or dictionary doesn’t understand unicode apostrophes. I remember having to manually fix a British English dictionary before, but I don’t know where that dictionary might be now…
